Job summary

Englewood Water District seeks a Laboratory Supervisor to operate its certified laboratory in Englewood, FL. The role focuses on monitoring process control, maintaining PT programs, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences required.
  • A Water and/or Wastewater Operator’s License will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an accredited laboratory, preferably water/wastewater testing.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Supervisor

Full Time Englewood, FL, US

Salary Range: $31.06 To $52.81 Hourly

General Description

This position is responsible for the operation of the Englewood Water District’s certified laboratory and as such is the primary individual responsible for monitoring process control for the facility assigned. This position must obtain IDOC for all applicable testing methods and maintain Proficiency Testing (PT) per the Laboratory Quality Manual.

Essential Job Functions
  • Oversee all laboratory operations including conducting analyses, data reduction, reporting, staff management, time management and multitasking, and maintaining regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as the laboratory quality assurance officer.
  • Ensures maintenance of laboratory certification.
  • Conducts data review, internal audits, training, and quality control checks.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory personnel and evaluates work performance of employees.
  • Responsible for creating purchase requisitions in SAP for lab related items, including but not limited to, obtaining various quotes as required.
  • Reviews fiscal year budgets to ensure the department is operating within its approved budget; forecasts and prepares future fiscal year budgets.
  • Conducts regular and special analysis of samples to validate the efficiency of treatment and to determine chemical and microbiological constituents (including, but not limited to, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, chlorine demand and residual, nutrient analysis, suspended and dissolved solids, chloride, sulfate, alkalinity, metals, and total and fecal coliforms.)
  • Verifies and interprets data submitted; processes data and prepares results for submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs analytical instrumentation as needed.
  • Calibrates and adjusts laboratory equipment as required.
  • Keeps abreast of changing regulations and modifies methods and/or procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures maintenance of laboratory certification.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry including qualitative and quantitative analysis relates to the operation of water/wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of modern chemical laboratory procedures, techniques, equipment, and their use.
  • Knowledge of physics, physical chemistry, and biochemistry.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions required in using chemicals and reagents in performing laboratory tests.
  • Ability to perform research work on problems of a chemical nature.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate scientific reports.
  • Ability to prepare compliance monitoring reports.
  • Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences required. A Water and/or Wastewater Operator’s License will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in an accredited laboratory, preferably associated with water/wastewater testing procedures monitoring treatment efficiency and process control.

(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)

Emergency Response Statement

Every District employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
