Placements24 is recruiting a Mobile Plant Technician for our mining client in Upington, Northern Cape. You will maintain, repair, and overhaul heavy mining equipment including excavators, haul trucks, loaders, and drilling rigs, with a focus on reliability and safety.

The role requires a trade qualification as a mechanic and at least 5 years' experience in heavy mobile plant. You will work across shifts and join a proactive team dedicated to uptime and performance in a demanding environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic testing and troubleshooting on heavy-duty mining plant equipment.
• Conduct routine preventative maintenance, inspections, and servicing according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements.
• Repair and overhaul complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on mobile plant machinery.
• Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information.
• Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are performed safely, adhering to strict mining industry safety protocols.
• Maintain accurate service and repair logs for all assigned equipment.
• Respond to urgent breakdowns and provide timely and effective repairs to minimize operational downtime.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other team members regarding equipment status and required work.
• Assist in inventory management of spare parts and consumables.
• Stay updated with new technologies and best practices in heavy mining equipment maintenance.

Requirements

• Trade Qualification as a Mechanic (e.g., Diesel Mechanic, Plant Mechanic, Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic).
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in maintaining and repairing heavy mobile plant, preferably within the mining sector.
• Proven expertise in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on heavy machinery.
• Strong understanding of diesel engines, power trains, and braking systems typical of mining equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret complex technical diagrams and service manuals.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
• Commitment to safety and quality workmanship, especially in a mining environment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote or challenging location like Upington.
• Valid driver's license.
• Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, and be on standby for emergency repairs.
