Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and servicing on heavy mining equipment.

About the Role

Our client, a major mining operation based in Welkom, Free State , is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join their fleet maintenance department. This critical role involves the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a diverse range of heavy mining machinery, including excavators, loaders, dozers, haul trucks, and drilling equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of the fleet, minimizing downtime, and upholding stringent safety standards. This position requires extensive knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrain components specific to heavy-duty mining equipment. A proactive approach to diagnostics and preventative maintenance is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and preventative servicing on heavy mining equipment.
• Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults in engines, transmissions, and undercarriage systems.
• Conduct major overhauls and component replacements as needed.
• Utilize diagnostic equipment and specialized tools to identify issues and ensure efficient repairs.
• Interpret technical manuals, service bulletins, and schematics to guide repair procedures.
• Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with safety regulations and company policies.

Requirements

• A relevant trade qualification (e.g., NQF Level 4/5) as a Diesel Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience working on heavy-duty mining or construction equipment.
• In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems common in mining machinery.
• Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software for heavy equipment.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, and repair diagrams.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to safety procedures and a strong awareness of environmental regulations.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license, preferably a Code 10 or equivalent.
• Willingness to work shifts and be available for standby duties as required in Welkom .
