Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital, part of BJC HealthCare, is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join its Missouri laboratory team. This role involves performing specimen processing and routine/complex testing with attention to quality control and documentation, in a fast-paced hospital setting.

The position is full-time with nights (11pm-7:30am), M-F with rotating weekends. Requires a BS or higher in life sciences, MLT-ASCP or equivalent, and 2–5 years of experience.

Qualifications

• BS in a physical or life science related field.
• MLT-ASCP or equiv.

Responsibilities

• Reports and maintains record of patient test results through the laboratory computer system accurately, meeting published turn around times for routine testing and stats.
• Documents patient test management problems/concerns on quality documents and initiates corrective action.
• Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver precise, timely, and accurate laboratory results. Performs laboratory procedures for specimen collection, processing, test analysis.
• Performs quality controls for all equipment and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation as necessary. Monitors quality control performance and corrects any problems and or reports any problems to the appropriate department. Assesses technical and or instrument problems, including quality control and abnormal findings, evaluate possible solutions and chooses an appropriate course of action to solve the problem.
• Trains new personnel in methods, procedures and use of equipment and instruments specific to the assigned area.

Performs specimen processing and routine / complex testing on blood and other specimens which requires a knowledge and understanding of quality control, basic instrument maintenance, and procedure methodologies and reference ranges. Maintains appropriate documentation of all activities as required. Demonstrates good laboratory practice May also coordinate the activities of the lab.
