Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) I to join the Laboratory Services team. The role involves processing and performing routine tests on blood and other specimens with attention to quality control and instrument maintenance.

The department operates 24 hours a day and supports Hematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology and more to ensure accurate patient results across the hospital network.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in physical or life sciences as minimum.
• Experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of quality control, instrument maintenance and testing procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operates instrumentation to deliver precise, timely laboratory results.
• Reports results through the LIS with timely turnaround for routine tests.
• Performs quality controls and troubleshoots instrumentation as needed.
• Participates in performance improvement activities and initiatives.

The Department of Laboratories, Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), is a full service laboratory, operating 24 hours a day. Laboratory Services are provided in Hematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Flow Cytometry, Cytology, Surgical Pathology, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine. Additionally, BJH operates a Histocompatibility Laboratory (HLA), blood donor/Pheresis Service, a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Preservation Laboratory in support of the tertiary care mission of BJH and laboratory diagnostic needs of BJC HealthCare members and affiliates and other clients. The laboratory oversees point of care testing hospital-wide. Laboratory analysis is performed on specimens of blood, urine, other body fluids, and tissue specimens submitted for testing on order of a physician or other health care provider approved to order laboratory testing.

Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

The Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) I performs processing and routine testing on blood and other specimens which requires a knowledge and understanding of quality control, basic instrument maintenance, and procedure methodologies and reference ranges. Demonstrates good laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

• Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver precise, timely, and accurate laboratory results. Performs all testing and operation of equipment as necessary to deliver quality results.
• Reports results through the laboratory computer system accurately, meeting published turn around times for routine testing and stats.
• Performs quality controls for all equipment and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation as necessary.
• Participates in performance improvement activities and initiatives by proactively diagnosing and resolving problems. Specific quality functions are handled in an organized and timely fashion.
