Job summary

South Dakota Department of Public Safety in Pierre, SD seeks a full-time Emergency Management specialist to join the mitigation and floodplain team. You will review floodplain ordinances, promote NFIP participation, assist with mitigation projects and grants, and liaise with local governments and FEMA.

The role includes serving as a Duty Officer on a rotating schedule, requiring on-call availability and occasional travel within the state. Strong communication and planning skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree preferred or equivalent.
• Knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
• Familiarity with NIMS/ICS and government processes.
• Strong grammar and business writing skills.

Responsibilities

• Review floodplain management ordinances and provide technical assistance to communities.
• Outreach to NFIP non-participating communities to join the program.
• Support mitigation project development and grant applications.
• Liaise between local governments and State/FEMA officials.
• Assist in coordinating with emergency management stakeholders during incidents.
