US Aggregates is seeking a Mine Engineer Intern to support continuous improvement and capital project activities across its Indiana locations. You will work with operations, safety, quality, sales, and engineering teams while completing a defined summer project that aims to drive measurable efficiency improvements.

The internship is full-time, based mainly out of the Indianapolis corporate office with travel to plant sites in Indiana.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering required; sophomores, juniors, or seniors preferred.
  • 1+ years of work or internship experience in a professional, technical, or trades environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes daily operational procedures and production trends to identify efficiency improvements.
  • Supports root cause analysis and coordinates corrective actions.
  • Designs and delivers a defined summer project with a final presentation to leadership.
  • Prepares justifications and documentation communicating technical findings clearly.

Build your career at US Aggregates!The Mine Engineer Intern supports continuous improvement and capital project activities across U.S. Aggregates' 27 Indiana plant locations, contributing analytical and technical skills to real-world operations challenges. Working alongside operations, safety, sales, quality, and engineering teams, this intern gains broad exposure to aggregate production environments while completing a defined summer project designed to drive measurable operational efficiency improvements. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, analytically minded, and eager to apply engineering fundamentals in a hands-on industrial setting.This position will be primarily located out of our U.S. Aggregates corporate office in Indianapolis, IN, with frequent travel to plant sites across Indiana.The schedule for this internship position is full-time, aligned with the summer term; occasional extended hours may be required to meet project milestones.Essential FunctionsAnalyzes daily operational procedures, performance metrics, and production trends across U.S. Aggregates plant sites to identify efficiency improvement opportunities and develop data-driven recommendationsSupports incident investigations by contributing to root cause analysis, coordinating the execution of corrective action items, and tracking continuous improvement activities to reduce recurrenceCollaborates with Plant Managers and the Quality Manager to review operating procedures, collect and analyze production data, and contribute to strategies that optimize aggregate production performanceDesigns and delivers a defined summer project — including a final presentation to U.S. Aggregates leadership — with clear objectives, documented findings, and measurable outcome recommendationsPrepares project justifications and supporting documentation that communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to operational and engineering stakeholdersApplies technical and analytical skills across operations, safety, quality, sales, and engineering functions, building a comprehensive foundation in aggregate production and mine engineeringAdditional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company’s core values, competencies, and skills.Education QualificationsHigh School Diploma or equivalent requiredCurrently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering required — sophomore, junior, and senior candidates are preferred; recent graduates will also be consideredExperience Qualifications1+ years of work or internship experience in a professional, technical, or trades environment preferredSkills and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of engineering principles with the ability to apply technical concepts to operational analysis, process improvement, and capital project support in an aggregate production environmentProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel (data analysis, pivot tables) and PowerPoint; working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar technical drafting or design software to support project documentation and analysisStrong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly and professionally to both operational teams and senior leadershipDemonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze operational data, identify root causes, and develop practical, data-driven recommendationsSelf-motivated and organized, with strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a dynamic, multi-site field environmentAbility to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and to adapt effectively in a hands-on industrial environmentWorking Conditions/Physical DemandsWork is performed across a combination of office and active aggregate plant environments, with regular exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and outdoor conditions during site visitsThis role requires travel to plant locations across Indiana as business needs dictateWork involves both desk-based analytical work and active site walkthroughs requiring sustained walking, standing, crouching, and kneelingMust be able to lift, carry, or move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 poundsAll site work is performed in compliance with U.S. Aggregates safety standards; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times on-siteAbout US AggregatesUS Aggregates is a privately held, family-owned business headquartered in Indianapolis.
