Job Title: Millwright Apprentice
Job Description

Join a growing construction and fabrication team that specializes in agricultural processing facilities, where you will help build, dismantle, and service grain handling equipment, elevators, and conveyors. As a Millwright Apprentice, you will support experienced millwrights with equipment installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and rigging work for both local and national customers. This role combines hands-on mechanical work, travel, and exposure to a wide range of industrial environments, offering strong long-term growth and development opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in assembling and erecting structural steel and equipment components in agricultural processing plants, grain elevators, and related facilities.

  • Interpret and work from shop drawings, blueprints, and layout plans to support accurate installation and alignment of equipment and machinery.

  • Perform non-critical welding under supervision, including basic stick, MIG, and TIG welding tasks as required for installation and repair work.

  • Help establish equipment and machinery center lines and elevations to ensure proper placement and performance.

  • Support complex rigging activities, including moving, lifting, and setting equipment and machinery safely inside plants and on job sites.

  • Participate in the precision installation of equipment, machinery, and components, including anchoring, leveling, and aligning to specified tolerances.

  • Assist with troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical equipment and systems in processing plants and grain handling facilities.

  • Use hand tools and power tools to perform mechanical assembly, disassembly, repair, and maintenance tasks.

  • Support preventive maintenance activities on equipment, including inspections, adjustments, and minor repairs.

  • Assist with pipe fitting, piping layout, and basic hydraulic and mechanical connections as required for equipment installations.

  • Travel to local and out-of-town customer sites (approximately 50% local and 50% travel) to perform service, maintenance, and installation work.

  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working at heights up to 100 feet, inside plants, and in outdoor conditions.

Essential Skills
  • At least 1 year of experience in a mechanical job such as construction, automotive, maintenance, or skilled trades.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and strong interest in mechanical systems and industrial equipment.

  • Ability to work from heights up to 100 feet while following appropriate safety procedures.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time for work at customer sites.

  • Basic experience using hand tools and power tools for mechanical, construction, or maintenance tasks.

  • Capability to assist with welding tasks, including stick, MIG, or TIG welding, under guidance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in millwright work, mechanical maintenance, or industrial construction is a plus.

  • Background in rigging, equipment installation, or industrial fabrication is highly beneficial.

  • Familiarity with grain handling equipment, conveyors, elevators, or agricultural processing equipment is an advantage.

  • Basic pipe fitting or piping experience, including working with hydraulics and mechanical piping systems, is preferred.

  • Exposure to preventive maintenance programs and mechanical troubleshooting in an industrial setting is helpful.

  • Experience with welding processes such as stick, MIG, and TIG in a construction or fabrication environment is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to assist in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and hydraulic issues.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small crew under the direction of a foreman or superintendent.

Work Environment

You will work primarily in agricultural processing plants, ethanol plants, and grain elevators, both indoors and outdoors, depending on project needs. Typical crews consist of 45 team members led by a foreman or superintendent, fostering a collaborative and hands-on learning environment. Standard hours are approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some variation based on project requirements. The role involves frequent use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, rigging gear, and fabrication tools in industrial settings. You will regularly work at heights and around heavy equipment, following strict safety practices. Travel is split roughly 50% local and 50% out-of-town, with work performed at multiple customer sites, providing exposure to a variety of facilities and equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of CEDAR RAPIDS, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $38.00/hr.
