Job summary

  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauges to verify dimensions and ensure proper tolerances.

Job Title: Maintenance Machinist

Maintenance Machinist fabricates, repairs, and rebuilds mechanical components and production equipment to support reliable manufacturing operations. This role sets up and operates manual machine tools, performs precision machining and fabrication work, and partners closely with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to improve equipment performance and reduce downtime.

Responsibilities
  • Fabricate replacement parts, machine components, guards, brackets, shafts, and tooling to support production and packaging equipment.
  • Set up and operate manual machine shop equipment, including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, and saws.
  • Perform precision machining using blueprints, sketches, measurements, and equipment specifications to meet required tolerances.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical failures on conveyors, packaging equipment, fillers, mixers, pumps, and other production machinery.
  • Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and metal fabrication to repair or modify equipment and facility components.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauges to verify dimensions and ensure proper tolerances.
  • Install, modify, and rebuild machine components, including bearings, shafts, bushings, gears, sprockets, and conveyor assemblies.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Maintain and support the spare parts inventory by fabricating unavailable or obsolete components when necessary.
  • Partner with maintenance technicians, engineering, and production teams to identify, recommend, and implement equipment improvements and upgrades.
  • Apply electrical and controls troubleshooting skills, including PLC troubleshooting and working with control systems and wiring, to support reliable equipment operation.
  • Work safely and maintain a clean, organized work area in the machine shop and on the production floor.
Essential Skills
  • 3+ years of maintenance machinist, toolmaker, or industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong experience operating manual lathes, mills, grinders, and fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and technical schematics.
  • Hands-on experience with manual machining, including mills and lathes.
  • Mechanical aptitude in a manufacturing, industrial, or food processing environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical issues on production, packaging, and conveying equipment.
  • Ability to perform welding, cutting, grinding, and metal fabrication for equipment repair and modification.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauges.
  • Basic electrical and controls knowledge, including troubleshooting, PLC troubleshooting, PLC control, control systems, wiring, and electronics.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with maintenance, engineering, and production teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working in manufacturing, industrial, or food processing facilities.
  • Experience in both mechanical maintenance and manual machining.
  • Comfort working with packaging machines, conveyors, and food processing equipment.
  • Ability to support preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in precision machining and fabrication work.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clean, temperature-controlled manufacturing facility of approximately 200,000 square feet that houses packaging machines, conveyors, and food processing equipment. The Ameriplex facility is newly built with brand-new equipment and a modern layout designed for efficient and safe operations. The position follows a first-shift schedule with flexibility on start time, and you can expect to work around 40 hours per week while remaining flexible for occasional call-ins as needed. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and safe work practices in both the production areas and the machine shop.

This is a Permanent position based out of Portage, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $72800.00 - $83200.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
