Job summary

Magellan Health in Virginia Beach seeks a Military and Family Life School Counselor to provide non‑medical counseling and wellness services to children of military service members, at installations and off‑installation sites.

Responsibilities include brief counseling, referrals, trainings, consultations with parents and schools, data reporting, and collaboration with community resources, while complying with DoD protocols and CNACI/IRC checks.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in a mental-health related field from an accredited program.
• Valid unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, DC, U.S. Territory or Commonwealth.
• Minimum two years of post-licensure clinical experience.
• Intermediate-level competency in technology and software (Microsoft Suite, internet navigation, smartphone/tablet apps, video-conferencing).
• U.S. citizenship and fluency in English.

Responsibilities

• Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling: assessment, brief counseling, action planning, referral to resources, and follow-up.
• Deliver trainings and health and wellness presentations and participate in health fairs and other installation activities focused on children and youth.
• Consult with parents, personnel, schools, and installation command regarding behavioral health issues affecting children and youth.
• Maintain accurate counselor activity data daily through smartphone or web application, ensuring confidentiality and reporting accuracy.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and provide appropriate linkages.
• Adhere to DoD line-of-sight protocol and manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situations.
• Communicate with Regional Supervisor and participate in regular supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues.
• Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
• Maintain a flexible schedule to respond to urgent requests as needed.
• Participate in regular in-services, training, quality improvement committees, pilot programs, and other contract activities.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
