Job summary

Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is seeking a dedicated youth program staff to assist with daily classroom operations and ensure culturally relevant activities across arts, language and culture, technology, education, fitness, health, leadership and service for youth aged 5-12.

The role emphasizes Ojibwe language growth, positive relationships with families, and adherence to licensing standards, CACFP guidelines, and professional development requirements.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum one year of experience working with school-age children in a center setting preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and experience.
• Must pass Leech Lake Licensing Standards.
• First Aid/CPR certification (Adult, Child, and Infant).
• Native American preference.
• Must be able to use a computer to develop documents, charts and letters.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Create space for speaking and learning Ojibwe with increasing frequency and skill.
• Maintain positive work atmosphere by modeling and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with children, families, co-workers, and community members.
• Directs and promotes team cooperation in implementing LLBO policies and licensing requirements.
• Assist with program planning and ensure that daily/monthly reports are completed and submitted on time.
• Attend and/or conduct mandatory meetings and trainings as required.
• Travel in and out of the state on a regular basis.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times.
• Engage with families and provide ongoing communication about child development.

Summary:

Assists with oversight to the daily operations of the classroom. Ensures that all daily activities that are culturally relevant and a high-quality educational experience. In a team environment, p lans, organizes, implements activities that support youth development outcomes that include arts, language and culture, technology, education, fitness, health, leadership and service.

Education Requirements and Experience:

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED), and a minimum of one year of experience working with school-age children in a center setting preferred.

Demonstrated experience in youth supervision

Demonstrated leadership skills and experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

Demonstrated commitment to Ojibwe-Anishinaabe culture, language and revitalization efforts.

Possess an understanding and sensitivity and passion to work with Anishinaabe children, families and communities.

With increasing frequency and skill, speak Ojibwe.

Demonstrates increasing knowledge and practice of Ojibwe-Anishinaabe lifeways and practices.

Active learner.

Native American preference.

Ability to establish and maintain positive, trusting and supportive relationships.

The ability to handle diverse work problems is required.

Requires the ability to set priorities and work schedule.

Be flexible with time, adaptable to various environments and a self-starter.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Directs and promotes team cooperation in implementing the LLBO policies, Center Policies, the Leech Lake Child Care Licensing Requirements, and the Early Childhood Policies and Procedures.

Assist with program planning and ensure that the daily, monthly reports required by the staff are completed and submitted by the due date.

Attend and or conduct all mandatory meetings and trainings as required.

Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times.

Travel in and out of the state on a regular basis.

Understanding and sensitivity to Native American culture.

Adhere to policies governing staff conduct.

Classroom:

With the team, ensure that programming is inclusive of the arts, language and culture, technology, education, fitness, health, leadership, and service.

Ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.

Engage youth in cultural hands‑on activities that help them discover a sense of self‑identity and belonging.

Actively engage with children. Build a consistent, respectful, and nurturing relationship with each child.

Incorporate outdoor learning, garden experiences, and nature play in regular routines and learning plans.

Promote and assist public relations by creating positive communications with parents, staff, and community members, including the resolution of conflicts.

Ensure planning supports for individual child learning based on the child’s development, interests, learning style, and goals.

Provide oversight to the tracking and assessment of each child’s development and learning, and how it is communicated with families.

Ensure the development of behavior support plans, as necessary, for individual children that include parent input.

Families:

Build ongoing relationships with families and develop regular communication.

Share Ojibwe language materials and goals with families.

Regularly share observations with families about their child’s activities, interests, and development.

Participate in the Family Engagement programming.

Professional Development and Parent Engagement:

Participate in annual training as required by licensing, and attend ongoing in-service training.

Attend CACFP annual training and refresher courses as necessary.

CACFP:

Be knowledgeable and ensure implementation of the CACFP service and Food Chart.

Be knowledgeable and ensure implementation of CACFP Diet Statements (allergies) for participants who cannot follow the meal patterns.

Ensure the ADA of the Monthly Attendance & Meal Count is followed.

Physical Requirements:

A physical is required biannually, and a TB test is required every 5 years.

Subject to random drug testing.

Requires sitting, standing, bending, stooping, crawling, lifting, hiking, climbing, running, and reaching with manual dexterity sufficient to address the needs of children 5-12.

Be physically fit to work with children 5-12.

Be able to lift 50 lbs. three times or more and use proper body mechanics.

Ability to be outdoors year-round.
