Summary Description
Green Acres School is seeking a full-time Middle School social studies teacher to join our dynamic staff community for the 2025–2026 school year.
We are seeking a passionate and innovative Middle School social studies teacher who is committed to progressive education and student-centered learning. The candidate will teach across 5th–8th grades. The curriculum includes U.S. geography, ancient civilizations, and modern world history. The ideal candidate will engage students in thoughtful inquiry, historical analysis, and critical discussions around local and global issues. This educator should be enthusiastic about interdisciplinary teaching, culturally responsive pedagogy, and fostering a collaborative classroom environment.
In addition to their teaching responsibilities, this teacher will play a key role in shaping and implementing meaningful community engagement opportunities for Middle School students as the service learning coordinator. This position supports the school’s mission by fostering empathy, leadership, civic responsibility, and reflection through experiential learning projects. The coordinator works closely with faculty, administrators, students, and community partners to develop, integrate, and assess service learning initiatives that align with grade-level curricula and school values.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement engaging, inquiry-based units and lessons in social studies..
- Encourage critical thinking, historical empathy, and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and narratives.
- Integrate current events, project-based learning, and experiential opportunities into the curriculum.
- Collaborate with colleagues in interdisciplinary projects and school-wide initiatives.
- Use a variety of assessment tools to support and measure student growth.
- Create a classroom environment that celebrates diversity, promotes equity, and supports the socio-emotional development of Middle School students.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with students, families, and colleagues.
- Participate in school life beyond the classroom (e.g., advisory, field trips, community events).
- Design and implement service learning opportunities across the school, ensuring age-appropriate experiences.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate service learning into academic subjects and advisory programs.
- Identify, establish, and maintain relationships with local community organizations and nonprofits.
- Plan and coordinate on-campus and off-campus service events, including logistics, permissions, and transportation.
- Track and document student participation and service hours.
- Maintain a calendar of service events and ensure alignment with school schedules.
- Manage risk assessments, permission forms, and safety protocols for service learning experiences.
- Core Middle School teachers accompany students as a chaperone on overnight trips of 3–5 days once or twice a year.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in history, education, or related field; master’s preferred.
- Teaching experience with Middle School students, ideally in a progressive or independent school setting.
- Deep knowledge of social studies content and progressive teaching methodologies.
- Strong classroom management skills centered on mutual respect and student autonomy.
- Commitment to anti-bias education and inclusive teaching practices.
- Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative and reflective professional culture.
Possess strong technology skills to effectively utilize digital tools and platforms in their teaching and classroom management, including use of Blackbaud for educational and administrative purposes.
