TITLE OF POSITION: Otsego Middle School Science Teacher (2 positions)

STARTING DATE: 2025-26 School Year

Otsego Public Schools’ staff is the heart of the district, and we are looking to add two Science teachers to our middle school staff. Science teachers provide instruction and guidance to help students explore and understand important concepts in science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions.

Primary tasks (non-exhaustive list):

  • Plan lessons and prepare class materials and homework assignments to meet class objectives.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and district-adopted Tier I curriculum consistent with parameters of the educational environment and the needs and limitations of the students involved.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.

Requirements:

  • Michigan Teacher Certificate, with DX/DI (Science) Endorsement
  • Experience in the middle school setting preferred

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: SCIENCE TEACHER

CONTRACT: 10 Month Employee

POSITION SUMMARY: All employees of the Otsego Public Schools, including Science Teachers, are expected to display a positive, caring, nurturing attitude and a genuine desire to assist all students and staff when necessary to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

Science teachers provide instruction and guidance to help students explore and understand important concepts in science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions.

RECOMMENDED EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate, with Science (DX/DI) Endorsement

EXPERIENCE: Some teaching experience strongly preferred

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan lessons and prepare class materials and homework assignments to meet class objectives.
  • Be trained in MISTAR curriculum as well as attend continued training on the Next Generations science standards and 3D assessment
  • Work collaboratively with the science PLC, committed to bringing data to constantly assess how students are doing, how the program/curriculum is being implemented and how assessments are working.
  • Work to create strong relationships with both the middle and high school Science PLCs to ensure a strong Science program at OPS
  • Gather the appropriate materials and equipment to address the goals and objectives.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and district-adopted Tier I curriculum consistent with parameters of the educational environment and the needs and limitations of the students involved.
  • Assess and document the students’ growth and provide progress reports as required.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Identify and utilize available district and community resources for educational purposes when appropriate.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with parents, administrators, peers and the community.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

From time to time, in emergency situations, it becomes necessary for all adults, including Science Teachers, to assist in supervising groups of students and attending to the physical needs of students.

REQUIRED: Capturing Kids Hearts training to be completed within the first two years of employment

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 month, regular position within Otsego Education Association.
