Position Overview

Every day, it is the great people at KIPP that prove the possibility. The School Leader (principal) is responsible for setting a powerful vision for student achievement and motivating others to follow that vision. Additionally, the School Leader is tasked with strategically implementing the school’s mission through effective leadership and management of the school’s students and staff, resulting in an instructional environment that prepares every student for success in college and in life. The School Leader is a full-time, exempt, school-based position and reports to the VP of Schools.

Currently, KIPP St. Louis educates over 2,000 students and has hundreds of alumni. Our network includes three elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school.

Job Description

Position type: Full-time, 12 months, exempt.

On a daily basis, you will oversee all functions at the individual school level, including:

Student Performance
  • Set and enforce rigorous standards for student achievement aligned with school and regional goals.
  • Ensure the academic program meets or exceeds yearly student outcome goals as defined by the school and region, measured by assessments like NWEA and MAP.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Organizational Leadership
  • Lead teachers in developing a healthy school culture aligned with the mission, vision, and values.
  • Create a culture of excellence, teamwork, and collaboration among staff, teachers, students, and families.
  • Foster a school climate that supports success and promotes respect and appreciation for all.
  • Oversee programs, services, and activities to meet objectives.
  • Manage student recruitment and enrollment to meet targets.
  • Ensure safety and security for all.
  • Address disciplinary issues promptly and fairly.
Instructional Leadership
  • Manage, evaluate, and develop staff.
  • Work with teachers to assess and improve student achievement.
  • Implement research-based teaching methodologies.
  • Lead data-driven discussions about student performance.
  • Support teachers through coaching and professional development.
  • Provide curricular training and resources.
Operational Leadership
  • Develop school budget with relevant leaders.
  • Oversee facilities maintenance.
  • Manage school records and resources.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
Personnel
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise staff.
  • Monitor staff performance.
  • Handle disciplinary actions.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers.
Community Relations
  • Serve as liaison with teachers, parents, and community.
  • Maintain professionalism and serve as a role model.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Administrative credential or current enrollment in a program required.
  • Success as a teacher (minimum 5 years) in an urban setting.
  • At least 1 year as a School Leader or two years as an Assistant School Leader.
  • Strong belief in all students' ability to learn.
  • High work ethic, patience, and accountability for student success.
  • Ability to use data to inform instruction.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient with technology and adaptable.
  • Organizational skills and humility to grow as a leader.
