Job description

Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school located in NW Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Music teacher in its Middle School division beginning in the 2025-26 school year.

The responsibilities of the position include:

1. Teaching general music courses for 6th and 7th grades, as well as 8th-grade electives in composition, music production, rhythm, drumming, and/or choral performance.
2. Serving as an advisor for 7th and 8th graders.
3. Collaborating with the Arts department and supporting colleagues in preparing students for performances such as fall and spring concerts, special events, and the 8th-grade promotion ceremony.
4. Assisting as an accompanist for the Middle School choral ensemble (grades 5-8) as needed.

The ideal candidate:

• Is a team player with a genuine understanding of and appreciation for adolescents.
• Thrives in a lively, fast-paced academic environment.
• Has a proven track record of exceptional Middle School classroom management.
• Has experience working with music composition software and teaching vocal music.
• Possesses experience with the Orff Schulwerk or Kodaly approaches and can teach all aspects of general music, including xylophones, recorders, drumming, music literacy, listening, and folk dance/creative movement.
• Has highly preferred piano skills.

Qualifications:

• An undergraduate degree in Music, Music Education, or a related discipline is required; a master’s degree is preferred.

Salary range: $62,096 – $136,496, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
