Job Title: Middle School English Language Arts Teacher - STEAM Academy

The Ferguson Florissant School District is accepting applications for the position of STEAM Academy Middle School English Language Arts Teacher. The STEAM/Gifted Program provides an environment of excellence where students engage in project-based learning to develop a keen understanding of academic content and apply their knowledge. Students are empowered to take ownership of their learning and are encouraged to question and innovate. At the STEAM Academy, teachers focus on six essential competencies:

  1. Master core academic content
  2. Think critically and solve complex problems
  3. Work collaboratively
  4. Communicate effectively
  5. Learn how to learn
  6. Develop academic mindsets

STEAM/Gifted students will develop cognitive abilities, intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for lifelong success in 21st-century skills and civic life.

Job Summary/Purpose

Facilitate learning of curriculum and life skills that contribute to the development of mature, capable, and responsible individuals.

Essential Functions
  • Respect for the uniqueness of each individual learner.
  • Ability to meet the individual needs of all students to allow for growth and development.
  • Convey information to students through written and verbal communication.
  • Encourage student ownership of behavior.
  • Work effectively as part of a team in a STEAM project-based setting to produce critical thinkers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Missouri professional teaching certificate in grades 6-9 in English and Social Studies.
  • Gifted certification K-12 preferred or able to obtain within two years.
  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in English or Social Studies.
Responsibilities
  • Plan daily instructional activities, including lesson plans, materials, and assessments tailored to student needs.
  • Implement acceleration and differentiation strategies for varied learner needs.
  • Maintain high expectations and serve as a facilitator of student learning.
  • Utilize diverse teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and technology to maximize learning.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative methods, providing feedback and adjusting instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by law and district policy.
  • Deliver curriculum as outlined in district documents.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in school and district activities.
  • Establish a safe, organized, and welcoming classroom environment fostering community.
  • Manage student behavior positively, in accordance with district policies and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate respectfully and effectively with colleagues.
  • Model and communicate all aspects of literacy, including reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Encourage higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creativity.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
