Job Description
Douglas is a welcoming and supportive community located 30 minutes south of Worcester, conveniently accessible from Route 146. With a PreK-12 student population of approximately 1,200, the district’s mission is to ensure that all decisions are made in the best interest of students. Douglas Public Schools fosters a collaborative and congenial work environment with strong relationships among staff, the town, and the broader community, including a supportive and engaged school committee.
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable professional to support the effective implementation of special education services across our schools. The Special Education Coordinator is an educational leader who advances the district's commitment to high-quality, inclusive special education by providing instructional and administrative leadership that ensures students with disabilities receive individualized, equitable, and legally compliant educational services. Working collaboratively with building principals, educators, related service providers, families, and community partners, the Coordinator promotes inclusive practices and supports the successful implementation of special education programming across the school community.
This dynamic leadership role oversees the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring that services are aligned with each student\'s unique strengths, needs, and educational goals while meeting all state and federal special education requirements. The Coordinator facilitates IEP Team meetings, serves as the district representative, and provides expert guidance on procedural safeguards, evaluations, and compliance with special education laws and regulations.
The Coordinator is committed to fostering excellence in teaching and service delivery by providing ongoing coaching, professional development, and technical assistance to special education staff, related service providers, and support personnel. Through collaboration with the Director of Special Education & Student Support Services and building administrators, the Coordinator monitors program quality, supports staff growth, and ensures that services are delivered in the least restrictive environment and in accordance with students\' IEPs.
Beyond compliance, the Special Education Coordinator is an advocate for continuous improvement and innovation. By integrating current research, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends in special education, the Coordinator strengthens district programming and promotes equitable outcomes for all learners. The role also serves as a trusted resource for families, providing clear communication and guidance throughout the special education process—from referral and evaluation through IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, student-centered leader who is passionate about building strong partnerships, supporting educators, and ensuring that every student has access to meaningful educational opportunities. This position offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact by shaping high-quality special education services, mentoring staff, strengthening instructional practices, and helping create inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.
To remain current with evolving laws, best practices, and educational initiatives, the Coordinator actively participates in professional learning opportunities, including training sessions, workshops, conferences, administrative meetings, and district work sessions. The Coordinator embraces ongoing professional growth and contributes to district-wide initiatives through active collaboration and leadership. Additional duties and special projects may be assigned by the Director of Special Education & Student Support Services in support of district priorities and the continuous improvement of special education services.
Attendance at administrative meetings and work sessions is also required. Additional responsibilities and special projects may be assigned by the Director of Special Education & Student Support Services.
