Job description

Senior Technical Sales Manager – Advanced Microscopy

Location: Northeast US | Remote / Field-Based

Build a Business. Shape a Market. Own the Opportunity.

For an experienced microscopy sales professional, this is an opportunity to do more than manage a territory. You'll help establish and grow an advanced microscopy product line in the US, shaping the commercial strategy, developing key research relationships, and building a market with significant room for growth.

Our client is an established scientific instrumentation business expanding its advanced microscopy portfolio through a new product partnership. They're looking for a commercially driven, technically credible sales professional who wants meaningful ownership of the opportunity and the ability to influence how the business develops.

This is a role for someone who enjoys opening doors, developing new markets, and turning complex scientific technology into successful commercial outcomes.

The Opportunity

You'll take the lead in developing the US market for a specialized advanced microscopy product line, working closely with company leadership, product specialists, and applications support.

Rather than inheriting a fully developed territory, you'll have the opportunity to help determine where the biggest opportunities lie, how to reach the right customers, and how to build a sustainable sales pipeline.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Build the US sales strategy: Identify target markets, prioritize accounts, and develop a practical plan for establishing and growing the product line.
  • Develop new business: Proactively identify, engage, and convert opportunities across university research institutions, microscopy core facilities, and relevant biopharma organizations.
  • Own the full sales cycle: Lead opportunities from initial prospecting and customer discovery through technical demonstrations, commercial negotiations, and closing.
  • Lead technical conversations: Develop a deep understanding of the microscopy systems, their applications, and their value to research customers. Lead demonstrations with support from experienced technical specialists.
  • Develop key relationships: Build a strong network within the microscopy and research community, particularly across the Northeast US.
  • Create market demand: Identify the conferences, seminars, workshops, and customer engagement activities that will generate meaningful commercial opportunities.
  • Shape the future of the business: Track market feedback, identify growth opportunities, and help guide future investment as the product line and customer base expand.

You’ll have access to product expertise, applications support, and commercial leadership, with the expectation that you will increasingly operate independently and take ownership of results.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in established microscopy professionals who combine technical credibility with a genuine drive to win business.

You may already be selling advanced microscopy systems for a leading scientific instrumentation company, or you may have a strong background in confocal or fluorescence microscopy and the commercial experience to take on a broader opportunity.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Direct technical sales experience selling complex scientific instruments or capital equipment, including personal ownership of the sales process from prospecting through close.
  • Experience selling high-value instrumentation, ideally systems in the $600K–$1M range, with an understanding of the longer sales cycles and multiple stakeholders involved.
  • Strong knowledge of advanced microscopy, with super-resolution experience particularly attractive. Candidates with substantial confocal microscopy experience will also be considered.
  • The technical confidence to lead customer conversations and demonstrations, with the ability to develop increasing independence as product expertise grows.
  • A track record of generating new opportunities, developing territories, and winning business—not simply maintaining existing accounts.
  • Established relationships with microscopy core facilities, university research departments, research institutions, or relevant biopharma customers.
  • A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset and the motivation to help build a growing business.

Experience with established microscopy manufacturers and competing advanced imaging platforms will be particularly relevant.

Who Might Thrive Here?

This opportunity could suit a senior technical sales specialist, regional sales manager, or microscopy sales professional who has built a strong foundation in the industry and is ready for greater ownership.

Perhaps you’ve developed a successful territory and want more influence over commercial strategy. Perhaps you’ve sold sophisticated instruments for years and would welcome the challenge of establishing a newer product line. Or perhaps you’re looking for a role where your initiative and results can directly influence how the business grows.

What matters most is that you’re technically credible, commercially proactive, and motivated by the challenge of building something.

Location and Travel

This is a remote, field-based position, with a strong preference for candidates located in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, or elsewhere in the Northeast with established regional relationships.

Travel will be required for customer meetings, demonstrations, conferences, and training. Initial product and commercial training will be provided, including potential international travel to work with the manufacturing team.

Compensation and Growth
  • Base salary: Approximately $150,000, depending on experience. Can be flexible for the right experience
  • Commission: A commission‑focused compensation structure with uncapped earning potential initially; final commission details will be confirmed during the hiring process.
  • Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; 20 days of PTO; and a 401(k) match after one year.
  • Longer‑term opportunity: As the customer base and installed product base grow, there may be opportunities to influence future team expansion and take on broader commercial responsibility.

The opportunity is designed for someone motivated by both the challenge of building a market and the potential financial upside of successful sales performance.
