Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a power-systems engineer to lead design, integration, commissioning, and demonstration of resilient microgrids and distributed power systems. The role blends engineering analysis with hands-on field work, lab testing, and real-world deployment.

Based in Idaho Falls, the position focuses on energy storage, inverters, conventional generation, protection, and interconnections, requiring independent technical leadership and strong communication across sponsors

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related ABET-accredited program.
• 2+ years for Level 2 or 5+ years for Level 3 of relevant experience.
• DOE security clearance and US Citizenship required.
• Ability to travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Apply power-systems engineering principles to design, analyze, integrate, and operate microgrids and distributed power systems.
• Provide independent technical leadership across the lifecycle of power-system solutions from requirements to deployment.
• Develop and validate microgrid control, protection, and automation strategies.
• Perform power-system studies including one-line, load-flow, short-circuit, grounding, and protection coordination.
• Lead hands-on lab, field, and customer-site work involving equipment configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
• Evaluate interactions of energy storage, inverters, generators, transformers, loads, protection, and utility interconnections.
• Communicate methods, results, and recommendations through reports, reviews, and sponsor briefings.
