Job summary

Draper, an independent nonprofit R&D company in Cambridge, MA, seeks a Microfabrication Supervisor 2 to lead a MEMS manufacturing team and deliver high-reliability inertial sensors. You will translate program needs into production plans, collaborating with engineering, facilities, mission assurance, and cross-functional staff.

You will supervise eight+ technicians, drive Lean improvements, implement Eyelit MES, manage WIP, and ensure quality systems compliance while partnering with engineering

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years operational experience with 3+ years supervisory experience.
  • Experience complying with AS9100D production protocols is highly desired.
  • Experience using or configuring Manufacturing Engineering System and SPC is highly desired.
  • Technical experience with semiconductor or wafer fab environment is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise eight or more Microfabrication Technicians, including scheduling daily work assignments and performing evaluations.
  • Lead the implementation of Eyelit MES and its integration into a mixed production and R&D environment.
  • Manage trainings, cross-trainings and resource allocation; ensure documentation standards for production.
  • Coordinate with Mission Assurance to maintain a quality system and handle CAPAs.
  • Model Fab capacity to identify bottlenecks and work with teams to mitigate using Lean methods.
  • Collaborate with planning for materials, maintenance, and training/certification for staff.
  • Communicate production needs to stakeholders; provide updates to engineering leadership.
  • Foster teamwork and accountability; drive Lean improvements to yield, delivery, and cost.
  • Willingness to work shift hours, particularly early hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description Summary

The Draper Microfabrication Supervisor 2 is a key member of our operations team. As the Supervisor 2, you will be an operationally critical player in the microfab, which develops and manufactures next-generation and application-specific sensors and devices. The microfab focuses on inertial MEMs, but also develops solutions leveraging photonics, microfluidics, novel materials and 3D integration, including interposer and wafer level packaging (WLP) concepts. The supervisor 2 will support the delivery of high reliability inertial MEMS sensors by responding to, and fully supporting, production. The job requires integration of multidisciplinary information from program management, engineering management, facilities, mission assurance, and process engineering to meet critical customers' needs. The supervisor 2 will work closely with technical staff, equipment specialists and technicians, serving as a bridge to translate staff needs to work plans with complex constraints.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Supervise eight or more Microfabrication Technicians, including scheduling daily work assignments, performing annual evaluations and participating in the hiring process as needed.

  • Implementation of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is a key enabler to the future of Draper's MEMS technology strategy. This role involves working as a member a cross-functional team on startup, configuration and introduction of Eyelit MES and application of it to a combined low-rate production and R&D environment.

  • Management of trainings, cross-trainings and resource allocation to assure effective program support. Complying with documentation standards for production.

  • Work with Mission Assurance to keep documentation up to date including process change notifications and corrective actions. Oversee the execution of corrective actions. Ensure maintenance of a quality system to contract requirements.

  • Analyze and model Fab capacity with emphasis on identifying bottlenecks and throughput challenge areas, working with the engineering and maintenance teams to identify and implement mitigation strategies and potential improvement using Lean Manufacturing principles.

  • Collaborate and organize information with other operational functions, including planning for materials/consumables, preventative maintenance for lab equipment, and ensuring employees are current with required training and certification.

  • Day to day management and communication of production needs to internal and external stakeholders. Provide periodic updates to engineering leadership as necessary.

  • Foster teamwork and accountability with staff.

  • Working closely with programmatic and technical management to manage Work in Progress (WIP) flow in the fabrication facility. Use Lean Manufacturing principles to improve manufacturing operations related to yield, on-time delivery, and cutting costs.

  • Willingness to work shift hours, particularly early hours.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills/Abilities
  • Must demonstrate initiative and problem solving with a focus on quality and schedule.

  • Possess excellent organization, prioritization, and written/oral communication skill.

  • Ability to brief both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Display good interpersonal skills required to communicate clearly with internal team and customers; experience as area lead or supervisor.

  • Be self-motivated, able to adapt to changing priorities and must thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Working knowledge of and experience in implementing Lean Manufacturing / 6-Sigma principals to effect capability improvements.

  • Ability to project, budget, and track small scale projects.

  • Ability to learn and interact with Manufacturing Execution System and Statistical Process Control tools.

  • Experience with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement practices, and statistical process control.

Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering

Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years operational experience, 3+ years of supervisory experience.

US Base Salary

The US base salary range for this full-time position is

$100,000.00 - $275,000.00

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Union ranges will be in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement's approved rates by location and role.
