Job Summary

Meter Reader – responsible for reading and recording water and electric meter readings using a hand‑held computer. Reports irregularities found in the field and provides courteous customer service when responding to inquiries and complaints.

Job Responsibilities

• Read water and electric meters and accurately record readings.
• Use a hand‑held computer to log readings and related data.
• Identify and report irregularities or service issues discovered during meter readings.
• Respond to customer inquiries and complaints with professionalism and courtesy.
• Perform field duties including walking, climbing stairs, carrying equipment, and operating the meter reading scope or mirror as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Work outdoors and walk over seven miles per day on varied terrain.
• Squat and bend approximately 150‑250 times daily.
• Climb multiple flights of stairs and operate a hand‑held computer while moving.
• Carry approximately 15 pounds of equipment throughout the shift.
• Lift and slide water meter lids weighing 10‑25 pounds regularly (up to 50 pounds on occasion).
• Work in all weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, and handle occasional hostile animals.
• Read meters under challenging conditions such as poor lighting or at a distance using a scope or mirror.
• Possess good eyesight and the ability to memorize multiple alphanumeric codes.
• Will work overtime, weekdays, and weekends as scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications

• One (1) year of full‑time paid experience reading and/or servicing meters for a utility, or
• Two (2) years of full‑time paid experience providing field customer service for an agency or utility.
