Job summary

Decatur Utilities in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Meter Reader to support the Central Parkway Service Center. You will walk or drive routes to read water, gas, wastewater and some electric meters for residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Must be able to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• Able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and manuals.
• Able to prepare routine reports and short correspondence.
• Effective interaction and communication with supervisors, coworkers, customers and the public.
• Able to operate meter reading software and mobile devices to record readings, photos, and memos.

Responsibilities

• Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of meter dials.
• Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections.
• Reports gas leaks found while reading.
• Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.
• Tags customer's door if meter cannot be read for any reason.
• Maintains route integrity and related tasks such as water register changes and meter box work.
• Assists in other areas of Field Services work as needed.

Description

Reads water, gas, wastewater and some electric consumption meters and records volume used by residential, commercial and industrial customers.

• Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department.

• Insures that routes are read in a timely manner.
• Maintains route integrity, including water register changes, meter box repairs and weed/shrub control.
• Assists in other areas of Field Services work as needed.
