Job summary

Decatur Utilities is seeking a Meter Reader to join the Meter Reading department at the Central Parkway Service Center. The role involves reading water, gas, wastewater and some electric meters for residential, commercial and industrial customers, and recording usage data.

You will follow safety procedures, maintain route integrity, and use meter reading software and mobile devices to capture readings, photos and memos. A High School diploma or GED and 1 year of related experience are required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Walks or drives to read meter dials on assigned routes.
• Inspects meters and connections for defects and unauthorized connections.
• Reports gas leaks found while reading.
• Uses meter reading software and mobile devices to record readings, photos and memos.
• Maintains route integrity and ensures timely readings.
• Assists in other Field Services tasks as needed.

Description

Reads water, gas, wastewater and some electric consumption meters and records volume used by residential, commercial and industrial customers.

• Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of meter dials.
• Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections.
• Reports gas leaks found while reading.
• Recognizes abnormal conditions and keys in proper response to generate service request.
• Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department.
• Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.
• Tags customer's door if meter cannot be read for any reason.
• Insures that routes are read in a timely manner.
• Maintains route integrity, including water register changes, meter box repairs and weed/shrub control.
• Assists in other areas of Field Services work as needed.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• High School diploma or GED

• Regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, and crouch
• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals.

• Ability to interact and effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, customers and public groups.
• Ability to operate meter reading software and mobile iPhone meter reading devices to record meter readings, photos, and memos.
