Job summary

City of Marietta is seeking a Meter Reader to accurately record electric and water meters on assigned routes using a handheld computer, and to read meters manually when required. You will verify readings and submit forms for tampered meters or repairs to supervisory staff.

This role requires reliable data entry into a PC, good reading of alphanumeric characters, the ability to lift, walk long distances, and work outdoors in all weather. Weekend hours may be needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and a minimum of two years of recent customer service experience using a PC to handle customer accounts.
• Must have a valid Class C Georgia driver's license and a satisfactory seven-year driving history, with no DUI in the last five years; drug screen and background check required.
• Ability to enter data accurately into a handheld computer and read alphanumeric characters with or without corrective lenses.
• Knowledge of electric and water meters and safety procedures; ability to identify tampered meters.
• Ability to learn street locations, maps, and the MBLW service area.
• Must be in good physical condition with the ability to walk for extended periods, work in all weather, and lift heavy items; weekends may be required.

Rate of Pay: $17.00 - $19.41

This position is responsible for accurately recording city/BLW utility meters into a hand-held computer or manually as needed. Reports customer utility bill complaints and any evidence of tampered meters to supervisory staff.

• Works on an assigned route and records electric and water meter readings into hand-held computer. Required to manually read meters as necessary.
• Completes necessary forms on meters that may have been tampered with or need repair and submits to supervisor.
• Verifies meter readings for Customer Service division on accounts with unusually high consumption.
• Requests and orders special services by entering codes in portable hand-held computer.

Preferred Qualifications:

• High school graduate or GED and a minimum of two years of recent customer service experience using a PC to handle customer accounts. Prefer utility meter reading experience to include electronically reading meters and programming consumption figures into computer.
• Must have a valid Class C Georgia driver's license and a satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI’s in the last five years. Drug screen and criminal background check at time of hire required.
• Must have skill in accurately entering data into hand-held computer and ability to read alphanumeric characters with or without corrective lenses.
• Knowledge of electric and water meters and safety procedures. Ability to identify tampered meters.
• Ability to learn street locations, local maps and the MBLW service area.
• Must be in good physical condition with the ability to walk for extended periods of time including up and down hills. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and work around dogs and other pets, insects, and other related conditions. Ability to perform heavy lifting.
