Job summary

McKinsey & Company is seeking a metals market strategy consultant to work on client engagements across strategy, operations, and due diligence in the Metals & Mining practice. You will analyze complex datasets, develop hypotheses, and deliver actionable recommendations while engaging with client leadership.

The role emphasizes building internal knowledge, cross-functional collaboration, and leveraging AI and analytics to improve plant processes and project outcomes.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree with excellent academic record required, ideally in metallurgical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a closely related field; advanced degree in similar field a plus
• 4+ years of relevant experience in metals market strategy, commercial due diligence, capital project (CAPEX) evaluation or consulting; expertise in steel, aluminum, or copper is a plus
• Experience working with complex datasets, including time series data, company financial statements, and/or operational market benchmarks
• Excellent organizational capabilities, including the ability to initiate tasks independently and see them through to completion
• Proficient in rational decision making based on data, facts, and logical reasoning
• Ability to create work product-focused materials / outputs, which may include PowerPoint decks, Excel models, articles, or other written deliverables
• Exceptional time management to meet your responsibilities in a complex and largely autonomous work environment
• Ability to travel to and work in varying environments that may be challenging and/or not accessible (e.g., factories, hospitals, mines)
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English and local office language(s)

Responsibilities

• Leads or contributes to client engagements across metals market strategy, due diligence, and CAPEX evaluation
• Identifies issues, forms hypotheses, designs analyses, and synthesizes conclusions into actionable recommendations
• Engages in client discussions and presentations with leadership and teams
• Develops and maintains internal knowledge to advance metals capabilities
• Works on strategy, operations, and due diligence projects, including AI and digital analytics initiatives
• Builds and maintains relationships with client teams and accelerates growth through insights
