POSITION: Mental Health/Disabilities Coordinator

SUPERVISOR: ECLLC Director

DIVISION: Tribal Education Administration

DEPARTMENT: Tribal Education Administration

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision, the Mental Health/Disabilities Coordinator is responsible for the oversight, development, and delivery of comprehensive behavioral health services for all students enrolled in the KTTT Education Program. This role includes direct clinical care, referrals, crisis intervention, behavioral observations, case management, and program coordination. The Coordinator will manage all aspects of behavioral health service delivery, including documentation, compliance, and collaboration with internal and external partners. The position supports both mental health and substance abuse services and integrates culturally responsive practices aligned with tribal values. Through proactive service coordination and the implementation of best practices, the Behavioral Health Coordinator ensures that the emotional and behavioral needs of students are met in a holistic and culturally appropriate manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Administer and manage all Mental Health and Disability services within the KTTT Education Department.
• Case management: Coordinate services to ensure comprehensive care for all students needing mental health/ disability services
• Parenting support: Provide guidance to parents and caregivers to enhance family dynamics.
• Crisis intervention: Offer immediate support to clients in acute distress.
• Review evaluations/observations to determine client needs and appropriate treatment approaches
• This position requires effective communication with a treatment team to support diagnosis and treatment.
• Responsible for ensuring the treatment plan that reflects a course of therapeutic intervention that will address the needs identified in the assessment is followed.
• Ensure assessments and counseling treatment for mental health and emotional/behavioral problems, for students are followed.
• Effectively uses written, verbal, and non-verbal communication to communicate ideas, direction, and treatment-to-treatment team and clients.
• Exercise a variety of individual and group counseling techniques that are evidence based in the treatment of readjustment counseling problems and demonstrate good clinical practice.
• This may include participation in administrative tasks such as medical record reviews, treatment outcomes projects, and program development projects in addition to direct-service-related documentation.
• Develop and implement strategic goals and plans to support mental health/ disabilities outcomes.
• Coordinate and lead program outreach activities and community education efforts.
• Oversee and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, agency guidelines, and grant requirements.
• Plan, develop, and direct staff activities to meet departmental goals.
• Support staff, including onboarding, performance evaluation, and professional development.
• Maintain an active caseload and provide individual, group, and family assistance as needed.
• Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans and behavioral interventions.
• Secure ongoing mental health consultation services and examines the approach to mental health consultation on an annual basis to determine if it meets the needs of the program.
• Build community partnerships to facilitate access to additional mental health resources and services, as needed, including through the Health and Mental Health Services Advisory Committee.
• Ensures that all children receive adequate screening and appropriate follow up and the parent receives referrals about how to access services for potential social, emotional, behavioral, or other mental health concerns.
• Coordinate and support positive learning environments for all children; supportive teacher practices; and strategies for supporting children with social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health concerns.
• Ensure mental health consultation services are available at a frequency of at least once a month.
• Coordinate internal and external referrals and ensure continuity of care.
• Educate tribal communities and school staff on available behavioral health services to promote awareness and utilization.
• Advocate for students and families within healthcare, educational, and social service systems.
• Ensure all services are age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed.
• Maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation in compliance with HIPAA and Tribal Education policies and procedures.
• Review and update departmental policies, protocols, and procedures as needed.
• Participate in continuous quality improvement and performance measurement initiatives.
• Coordinate communication and integration of behavioral health services with other departments and agencies.
• Attend continuing education, in-services, and professional development trainings to maintain licensure and program quality.
• Participate in assigned committees and cross-departmental planning efforts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Director or designee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR THE POSITION

• Strong leadership, team management, and organizational skills.
• Advanced knowledge of behavioral health practices, including assessment, treatment planning, and service coordination.
• Familiarity with mental health and substance use best practices, including trauma-informed care.
• Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and Spanish (preferred).
• Cultural sensitivity of Kickapoo traditions, beliefs, and way of life.
• Knowledge of Kickapoo culture and/or language (preferred, but not required).
• Understanding of community mental health resources and tribal health systems.
• Ability to make independent, sound decisions and exercise professional judgment.
• High attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation standards.
• Proficiency in using office machines and software (PC, printers, EHR, copiers, calculators, etc.).
• Ability to remain calm and compassionate in high-stress or crisis situations.
• Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to all HIPAA and privacy regulations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

This position does not carry out supervisory responsivities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in special education and have at least 10 years minimum experience working with special education students; modifying/adapting general education curriculum; providing education services in varied environments.

Preferred Qualifications: Licensed or certified in Special Education, School Psychology, Counseling, or a related field. Experience conducting developmental screenings and coordinating referrals for early intervention services. Experience developing and implementing individualized Education Programs (IEP’s) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP’s). Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to train and coach staff.
