Description
The Membership Manager is responsible for leading strategies and programs that strengthen member retention, renewal, engagement, and long-term member value. This role develops and implements member engagement initiatives, volunteer programs, and membership operations while using data-driven insights to improve participation, satisfaction, and retention. Working collaboratively across the organization, the Membership Manager helps deliver a consistent, high-quality member experience that supports IASLC's strategic objectives.
This exempt, nonsupervisory position reports to the Chief Marketing & Membership Officer (CMMO) and follows a hybrid work schedule based in the Denver, Colorado office.
Essential Functions
- Develop, implement, and optimize strategies that improve member recruitment, strengthen member retention, enhance member value, and support IASLC's long-term organizational objectives.
- Lead the Association's membership and engagement programs, including recruitment, onboarding, training, ongoing member support, and continuous program improvement.
- Manage the IASLC online member community, Thoracic Circle, fostering peer-to-peer connections and knowledge sharing.
- Identify and implement member engagement opportunities across IASLC programs, conferences, educational offerings, volunteer opportunities, online communities, and other member touchpoints.
- Develop and execute member recognition and volunteer appreciation programs that encourage participation, recognize contributions, and strengthen member engagement.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate various membership metrics. Utilize performance dashboards and provide data-driven recommendations to improve program effectiveness.
- Serve as a staff liaison to the Membership committee in collaboration with the CMMO and provide support for other member-led committees as needed.
- Coordinate IASLC nomination and appointment processes for the identification and selection of Board and committee members in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Develop, document, and continuously improve membership operations, governance processes, policies, and best practices to ensure consistency, efficiency, scalability, and an exceptional member experience.
- Leverage AI-enabled tools, automation, and emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency, member engagement, and program performance.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration with Membership, Marketing, Communications, Education, Scientific Affairs, IT, and other internal teams to integrate member engagement and retention strategies across organizational initiatives.
- Perform other related duties and special projects, as assigned, to support departmental and organizational objectives.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in member engagement, membership, community management, customer success, nonprofit management, or a related field.
- Experience working within a professional association, nonprofit, or membership-based organization.
- Demonstrated success developing and implementing member engagement, retention, volunteer, or committee programs.
- Strong project management, organizational, and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Experience using Association Management Systems (AMS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms, online community platforms, or similar engagement technologies.
- Experience analyzing data, developing reports, and providing data-driven recommendations.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as needed (approximately 5-10%).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing online communities, volunteer programs, or committee operations.
- Experience working within an international nonprofit or membership association.
- Familiarity with AI-enabled tools, automation, and member engagement technologies.
- Experience developing dashboards or using reporting and business intelligence tools.
- Foreign language proficiency is a plus.

- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.

Physical Demands
- Ability to sit at computer workstation for extended periods.
- Ability to lift/move 25-40 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Compensation
$70,000-$80,000 annually, depending on education and experience.
