Job summary

Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is seeking an Area Manager - Melt Shop to lead safe, efficient melt shop operations (EAF, LRF, VTD). You will supervise bargaining unit staff, drive cost control, and coordinate with maintenance and lab teams to meet quality specifications and production targets. The role emphasizes safety, continuous improvement, and strong leadership in a unionized environment. The position is on-site in Colorado and offers a competitive compensation package.

Qualifications

Associates degree required; bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering or related field preferred.
Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in heavy manufacturing; steel experience preferred.
Experience leading teams in a unionized environment is preferred.
Strong knowledge of EAF steelmaking and secondary metallurgy; familiarity with lab testing.

Responsibilities

Direct and coordinate daily melt shop operations (EAF, LRF, VTD) to meet production schedules and targets.
Lead safety-first culture; enforce PPE, safety policies, and regulatory compliance.
Ensure molten steel meets chemical, temperature and metallurgical specs; coordinate with lab teams.
Supervise and develop bargaining unit employees per the collective bargaining agreement; manage attendance and grievances.
Control melt shop costs including alloys, electrodes, refractories, consumables and utilities.
Coordinate maintenance with Reliability teams to troubleshoot and improve equipment uptime.
Support and lead capital projects related to melt shop operations and process improvements.
