Job summary

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a motivated Product Development Engineering Intern to support the OTTAVA Surgical Robotic Platform within the Development Engineering organization. You will work with engineers, manufacturers, quality teams, and suppliers on New Product Development, design transfer, and manufacturing readiness for regulated medical device projects.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering or related field.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical, electro‑mechanical, opto‑mechanical design principles.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks/Creo) for engineering design.
  • Exposure to GD&T, drawings, tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5).
  • Interest in DFM, DFA, cost engineering, and scalable manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with cross‑functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist planning, development, qualification, and stabilization of components and processes for NPD/NPI projects.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management and suppliers to evaluate options and solutions.
  • Apply DFM, DFA and Design‑to‑Cost to assess manufacturability and cost tradeoffs.
  • Assist with tolerance stack‑up, GD&T review, basic engineering analyses and documentation.
  • Support design reviews by preparing inputs, documenting risks and actions.
  • Participate in design transfer activities for smooth transition to manufacturing.
  • Assist with engineering builds, pilot runs, troubleshooting and root cause investigations.
  • Support PFMEA inputs, process characterization, control strategies, measurement systems analysis.
