Job summary

Johnson & Johnson in Santa Clara seeks a Product Development Engineering Intern to support the OTTAVA Surgical Robotic Platform within Development Engineering. You will work with engineers, suppliers, and quality teams on NPD, NPI, design transfer, and manufacturing readiness, gaining hands-on exposure to regulated medical device development.

Preferred projects include DFM/DFM, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and cross‑functional problem solving.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • Foundational understanding of design principles for mechanical/electro-mechanical products.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalents.
  • Exposure to GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, ASME Y14.5 concepts.
  • Interest in DF(M)/DF(A), cost engineering, and scalable manufacturing process development.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, development, qualification, and stabilization of components and processes for NPD/NPI.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management and suppliers.
  • Apply DFM/DFM principles to assess manufacturability, assembly flow, and cost.
  • Support tolerance stack‑up, GD&T review, basic engineering analysis, and documentation.
  • Help with design reviews, risks, action items, and feasibility/cost considerations.
  • Participate in design transfer activities to support manufacturing readiness.
  • Support builds, pilot runs, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and CAPA follow-up.
  • Assist with PFMEA inputs, process characterization, control strategies, and SQA tools.
