Position Highlights: The University of Arizona is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Medium Voltage Electrician to support the operation, maintenance, and reliability of the campus electrical distribution system. In this role, the technician will inspect, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair medium‑and high‑voltage equipment across campus substations and distribution networks. The technician will also perform switching operations, preventive maintenance, equipment installations, and system upgrades to help ensure safe and reliable electrical service to campus facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, inspect, and maintain medium‑voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, and switchgear to support continuous and reliable electrical service to campus facilities.
• Perform switching and other system operations as required to safely isolate equipment for maintenance, repairs, and outages.
• Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, and repair substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, protective relays, protective devices, and control systems.
• Diagnose electrical distribution system malfunctions using specialized electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
• Analyze equipment condition and test results to identify deficiencies and determine appropriate corrective actions.
• Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on substations, switchgear, utility systems, power generation equipment, emergency generators, and associated electrical equipment.
• Identify abnormal equipment conditions and maintenance needs to minimize equipment failures and system downtime.
• Assist with scheduled outages and maintenance activities required to maintain the safety and reliability of the campus electrical distribution system.
• Maintain accurate records, logs, test reports, equipment readings, inspection results, and documentation of maintenance and repair activities.
• Communicate equipment conditions, inspection findings, maintenance needs, and completed work with supervisors and other Facilities Management personnel.
• Perform equipment modifications, upgrades, and replacements associated with substations and medium‑voltage distribution systems.
• Verify proper equipment operation following installation or modification through functional testing and inspection.
• Assist with campus electrical improvement projects, equipment replacements, and system upgrades.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, protective relays, and control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings.
• Knowledge of electrical testing, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and safe switching practices.
• Ability to use electrical test equipment.
• Knowledge of OSHA and NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Equivalent combination of education, technical training, apprenticeship training, and relevant experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five years of electrical construction experience.
• Five years of electrical distribution power experience.
• Five years of plan review or blueprint reading experience.
• Experience with medium-voltage substation controls and the ability to read and interpret one-line and three-line diagrams.
• Completion of a Journeyman Apprenticeship Program or at least four years of experience in medium-voltage, substation, or electrical distribution work.
