The University of Arizona in Tucson seeks a Lead Plumber to perform journeyman-level installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of complex commercial and institutional plumbing systems, with expert knowledge of codes and mechanical room equipment.

The role leads the plumbing shop, oversees day-to-day operations, coordinates projects, ensures safety and compliance, and provides guidance to apprentices and junior plumbers. This is a full-time, on-site position with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Apprenticeship/technical training required.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Journeyman Plumber license or certification required.

Responsibilities

• Performs journeyman-level installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of commercial and institutional plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, gas piping, fixtures, and mechanical room equipment.
• Diagnoses and resolves complex plumbing issues affecting buildings and infrastructure.
• Independently troubleshoots system failures, leaks, pressure issues, and equipment malfunctions.
• Responds to emergency service calls and restores systems to operational condition with minimal disruption.
• Ensures all work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes, safety standards, and university policies.

Job description

The Lead Plumber performs journeyman-level plumbing work involving the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of complex commercial and institutional plumbing systems. This position requires expert knowledge of plumbing codes, mechanical room systems, specialty valves, and related equipment, with the ability to diagnose issues ranging from routine service calls to large-scale system failures.

The role operates independently, provides technical guidance to others as needed, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. This position will lead the plumbing shop that includes, plumbing maintenance, new work, existing work and repairs. Lead will oversee day to day operations, manpower layout, project allocation, tools and equipment (procurement, maintenance, and tracking). This position requires extensive knowledge of mechanical rooms/plumbing systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Diagnoses andresolves complex plumbing issues affecting buildings and infrastructure.
• Independentlytroubleshoot system failures, leaks, pressure issues, and equipmentmalfunctions.
• Responds toemergency service calls, assess risk, implement corrective actions, and restoresystems to operational condition with minimal disruption.
• Ensures allwork complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes, safety standards,and university policies.
• Completes workorders, inspections, documentation, and material take-offs accurately and in atimely manner.
• Reviewsdrawings, specifications, and schematics to execute work correctly.
• Providestechnical guidance and informal leadership to apprentices and lower-levelplumbers.
• Serves as arole model for safety, workmanship, professionalism, and customer service.
• Assists inplanning work activities and sequencing tasks for efficient execution.
• Communicatesprofessionally with building occupants, supervisors, contractors, and othertrades to coordinate work activities.
• Maintains aclean appearance and positive public relations while representing FacilitiesServices.

Knowledge,Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge ofcommercial and institutional plumbing systems, materials, and mechanical roomequipment.
• Knowledge ofapplicable plumbing codes and safety standards, with the ability to interpretand apply blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation.
• Skill in theuse of hand and power tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic devices.
• Ability to workindependently, prioritize multiple assignments, communicate effectively withcoworkers, supervisors, and customers, and maintain a safe work environment.

• Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
• Journeyman Plumber license or certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience performing commercial and/or institutional plumbing work, including troubleshooting and repair of complex plumbing issues.
