Front-Porch's Fredericka Manor Retirement Community in Chula Vista, CA is hiring a Medication Technician for a full-time PM shift (2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.) with a 4/2 rotation (4 days on, 2 days off).

You will perform routine patient/resident care and med passes under supervision, following policies and nursing standards. The position offers hourly pay of $20–$22 and requires completion of required training and adherence to safety, documentation and infection control guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Total of twenty four (24) hours of training within the first four weeks of employment.
  • Sixteen (16) hours of hands‑on shadowing and eight (8) hours of instruction before assisting with self‑administration of medications.
  • Four (4) hours of in‑service training on medication issues each succeeding 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Provides quality customer service to residents, families, coworkers and vendors.
  • Communicates with residents' healthcare providers, supervisor, family, and residents about health conditions and medication needs.
  • Ensures medications match what the prescriber has prescribed.
  • Knows basic medication assistance rules and helps residents self‑administer meds.
  • Follows infection control techniques during patient care.
  • Maintains proper storage, security and documentation of medications.
  • Follows processes for ordering, refills and receipt of medications from the pharmacy.
  • Documents all communications with prescribers and family per policy.
  • Monitors residents for adverse drug reactions and notifies supervisor as needed.
  • Maintains all documentation per federal/state regulations and company policies.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Charge Nurse, and/or Director of Health Services, the Medication Technician is responsible for performing routine patient/resident care and med pass according to policies and procedures and within acceptable nursing standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include the following: (Other duties may be assigned as necessary)

  • Provides quality Customer Service efficiently to residents, families, co-workers and vendors in a manner to ensure satisfaction.
  • Communicates with the resident’s health care providers, supervisor, family members/significant others, and the resident regarding health conditions and both prescription and non-prescription medication needs.
  • Ensures that the available medications coincide with what the authorized prescriber (e.g. physician) has prescribed.
  • Knows the basic rules and precautions of medication assistance. Manages medications and assists the resident to self-administer medications.
  • Follows infection control techniques in performing patient/resident care.
  • Understands the guidelines for the proper storage, security and documentation of centrally stored medications.
  • Follows the process used for medication ordering, refills and the receipt of medications from the pharmacy.
  • Logs all medications on community-approved medication log when received.
  • Destroys medications as needed and in accordance with state and community procedures.
  • Documents all communication with prescribers, family/significant others, and the resident according to your community policy.
  • Continual observation of each resident for potential adverse reactions to medications and/or signs/symptoms indicating the need for a change to the medication regime.
  • May assist community with caregiver functions.
  • Maintains all documentation as required by Federal and State regulations and Company policy.
  • Follows highest standards of cleanliness. Follows all federal, state and corporate policies, health codes and guidelines in preparation and handling of medication.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner. Wears safety equipment as required for the job. Reports any safety hazards and/or accidents to supervisor.
  • Attends all mandatory in-service meetings. Complies with all department and facilities policies and procedures.
JOB REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS
  • For unlicensed staff that assist with the self-administration of medications, a total of twenty four (24) hours of training shall be provided within the first four weeks of employment. Sixteen (16) hours of hands‑on shadowing and eight (8) hours of instruction shall be completed prior to assisting with the self‑administration of medications. Four (4) hours of in‑service training on medication related issues shall be completed in each succeeding 12 month period.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Basic mathematical skills required.
  • Able to understand, follow, support and initiate policies and procedures of the facility. Must be able to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately.
