Primary Purpose

Responsible for basic specimen processing and testing to assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients.

Minimum Specifications
Education

- Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience

- None required.

Equivalent Education and/or Experience
Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must be certified by one of the following or certification eligible with certification obtained within 6 months of hire:

  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) - National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Technologist, Blood Banking (BB) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Chemistry (C) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Hematology (H) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Microbiology (M) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Molecular Biology (MB) - ASCP
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Follow all laboratory procedures accurately.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of laboratory techniques.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test results.
  • Maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with hospital personnel and medical staff.
  • Use laboratory and hospital computer systems appropriately within three months of employment.
Responsibilities
  1. Receive specimens, assess integrity, verify labeling and documentation, and enter data for billing.
  2. Perform specimen processing, reagent preparation, testing, and report results.
  3. Conduct quality control tasks, maintain documentation, and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  4. Assist with training and consultation of new employees, residents, and students.
  5. Participate in the Pathology Quality Assurance program.
  6. Identify process improvements and support organizational goals; may perform research or product evaluation projects.
  7. Stay updated on developments in Pathology through seminars, journals, and publications, and incorporate new knowledge into practice.
  8. Adhere to applicable rules, regulations, policies, and laws, and report unethical or fraudulent behaviors.
