Primary Purpose

Responsible for basic specimen processing and testing to assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients.

Minimum Specifications
Education

- Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience

- None

Equivalent Education and/or Experience
Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must be certified by one of the following or certification eligible with certification obtained within 6 months of hire:

  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) - National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Technologist, Blood Banking (BB) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Chemistry (C) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Hematology (H) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Microbiology (M) - ASCP
  • Technologist, Molecular Biology (MB) - ASCP
Required Tests for Placement Skills or Special Abilities
  • Ability to follow all laboratory procedures
  • Working knowledge of laboratory techniques
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
  • Identify and address problems affecting test results
  • Maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and communicate effectively with hospital personnel and medical staff
  • Use laboratory and hospital computer systems within three months of employment
Responsibilities
  1. Receive specimens, assess specimen integrity, verify labeling and documentation, and data entry of orders for billing.
  2. Perform specimen processing, reagent preparation, testing, and report results.
  3. Perform quality control tasks, maintain documentation, and troubleshoot equipment.
  4. Assist in training new employees, residents, students, and physicians in laboratory procedures.
  5. Participate in the Pathology Quality Assurance program.
  6. Suggest and implement process improvements to enhance customer satisfaction and support the department’s goals.
  7. Stay updated on developments in Pathology through seminars, journals, and publications, and apply new knowledge.
  8. Follow applicable rules, regulations, and policies, report unethical or fraudulent behavior, and ensure compliance with laws and accreditation standards.
