Job description

Summary

Employee will be assigned to Patient Care Service under Ambulatory Care Nursing at either the VA Medical Center - Durham - NC or the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic - Raleigh - NC. The position involves duties such as specimen collection, processing, and preparation for transport, ensuring accuracy and integrity for routine and specialized testing.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care positions. A Selective Placement Factor for this role is experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.

Applicants must also meet one of the following:

  • Specialized Experience: At least 1 year of experience in laboratory support work, including performing tests, specimen collection, processing, and testing, equivalent to GS-4 level.
  • Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in relevant subjects.
  • Combination: Equivalent combinations of education and experience meeting the total qualification requirements.

Additional competencies include Computer Skills, Customer Service, Patient Care, Quality Assurance, and Specimen Collection. All experience must be documented with start/end dates, and volunteer work is credited.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged walking, standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working with PPE are required. Dexterity and coordination are necessary for procedures like venipuncture. Travel between clinics may be required.

Duties
  • Follow procedures for patient identification, sample procurement, and labeling.
  • Perform routine venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Manage samples to maintain physiologic integrity.
  • Educate patients on collection techniques.
  • Prepare samples for testing, maintaining supplies.
  • Answer calls and relay information or refer to technical staff.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as bleeding time, occult blood, urine dipstick, pregnancy, and glucose tests.
  • Sterilize equipment and maintain laboratory records.
  • Respond to adverse reactions like fainting or nausea.
  • Maintain BLS certification and adhere to work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.
