Summary

This listing is an Open Continuous Announcement for Washington DC VA Medical Center. This posting will be used to fill multiple Advanced Medical Support Assistant positions until it closes on 7/11/2025. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available. Applications will remain on file until October 11, 2025.

Duties

Cut-off Dates For Referral: The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications is April 24, 2025. Applications received after this date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur until positions are filled.

The work of an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) includes serving as an initial point of contact for units, clinics, patients, call centers, including scheduling patient appointments, tracking, reviewing, and responding to electronic orders, consults, and other elements in electronic medical records and systems. This role requires practical knowledge of data entry, information processing systems, medical terminology, and healthcare regulations.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Support Non-VA Care Coordination in line with the MISSION Act and Community Care Network programs.
  • Answer visitors and calls promptly and courteously.
  • Schedule, cancel, and reschedule appointments and consults.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, teams, VA centers, and external agencies.
  • Maintain and monitor appointment schedules, inform delays, and verify provider orders per scheduling guidelines.
  • Assist in setting team priorities, resolving administrative complaints, and providing policy information.
  • Maintain patient records, scan and enter data into VISTA and CPRS, and ensure data confidentiality.
  • Analyze situations for decision-making and understand the needs of Veteran patients aged 18-80, respecting their unique needs.
Work Schedule

Varied shifts, mostly Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm EST.

Additional Information

Position involves partial sedentary work with walking, standing, bending, and light carrying. Work environment includes patient care settings with safety precautions. Candidates should be mentally and emotionally stable, adaptable, and capable of working in stressful situations.

Minimum Requirements
  • U.S. citizen
  • Six months of clerical, office, customer service, or administrative experience OR one year of above high school education OR an equivalent experience/education combination.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Pre-employment evaluation may be required
  • Background/security investigation required
  • Must meet physical and health requirements as specified by VA directives
Qualifications

At least one year of experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, involving scheduling, data entry, patient coordination, and team collaboration. Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare processes, policies, medical terminology, and ability to communicate effectively across disciplines is essential.
