Summary

The incumbent serves as a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) in the VA Community Care team. Performs clerical and administrative support in the coordination, care, and treatment provided to patients throughout the VA Community Care processes in the Fargo VA Health Care System (VAHCS), including all Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages, scheduling appointments, and verifying provider orders according to VHA guidelines.
  • Scheduling, canceling, rescheduling patient appointments, monitoring appointment requests, and updating patient information. Coordinates transfers and verifies patient eligibility for community care.
  • Maintaining database integrity and supporting administrative functions related to patient care and community care policies.
  • Supporting clinical guidance during scheduling in collaboration with VA Community Care RNs.
  • Following up with patients regarding missed appointments and ensuring accurate record-keeping of Community Care consults.
  • Interpreting outpatient Community Care policies and initiating communication with contractors as needed.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of medical terminology relevant to clinical language used by healthcare providers.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Background/security investigation required.
  • Complete online onboarding; provide acceptable ID documents.
  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Six months clerical or administrative experience OR one year above high school education OR an equivalent combination (transcripts required).

Grade Levels and KSAs

GS-3: Entry level with basic skills.

GS-4: One year experience or two years of education above high school, with demonstrated ability in communication, computer use, and medical terminology.

GS-5: One year experience at GS-4 level or four years of education above high school, with advanced knowledge of medical terminology, scheduling, and independent work skills.

Physical Requirements: Participation in pre-employment exam required.

Additional Information: Education from accredited institutions or foreign equivalency required. The full performance level is GS-5, with a range of GS-3 to GS-5 applicable for hiring.
