The Medical Records Technician position with the Department of Corrections (DOC) offers a chance to support a vital part of inmate health care at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Fayette. This role lets you use your organization and focus to keep important information accurate and accessible. This role supports health care operations by keeping medical records organized, accurate, and compliant with standards. As a Medical Records Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Record Management:Organize and monitor integrated health records for incarcerated offenders
  • Coding Responsibilities:Code diseases, operations, and treatments according to applicable standards
  • Record Handling:File, withdraw, and issue records while following confidentiality and legal requirements
  • Documentation Review:Check records for completeness and refer inadequate entries to appropriate staff
  • Statistical Reporting:Prepare statistical reports on morbidity, mortality, and service utilization

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 60 or 65.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
Special Requirement:
  • You must be in possession of a valid Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certificate or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certificate issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or have eligibility for certification including completion of an AHIMA approved RHIT or RHIA Health Information Management education program.
Post Employment Requirement:
  • If you meet the Special Requirement based on the eligibility option for the RHIT or RHIA certification, you must obtain one of these certifications within 12 months of employment.
Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
