Job description

This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Washington DC, Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Medical Records Technician (MRT) (Coder) is skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in hospital settings, physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience: One year of creditable experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and the structure and format of health records.

OR

  • Education. An associate's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a major in health information technology/health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in relevant courses.

OR

  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program or similar intensive training program of about one year that included courses in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, ICD diagnostic/procedural, and CPT coding, leading to certification eligibility.

OR

  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.

Certification: Candidates must have one of the following certifications through AHIMA or AAPC: Apprentice/Associate Level, Mastery Level, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification. Current VHA employees may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision.

Grade Determinations

Details for GS-4 through GS-8 levels, including experience, education, and KSAs, are provided. For instance, GS-5 candidates need a bachelor's degree with specific coursework and demonstrated knowledge, while GS-8 candidates must demonstrate advanced skills in outpatient and inpatient coding, including complex documentation and coding scenarios.

Additional Information

The full performance level is GS-8, with the actual grade range from GS-4 to GS-8.
