Medical Records Technician (Coder-Outpatient and Inpatient)

Location: Washington DC, Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Summary: This position involves classifying medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings, including offices, clinics, and specialty centers.

Duties include:

  1. Assigning codes to documented patient care encounters (inpatient and outpatient).
  2. Selecting and assigning codes from ICD, CPT, and HCPCS systems.
  3. Adhering to coding guidelines and regulations for accurate and ethical coding.
  4. Monitoring regulatory and policy changes affecting coded information.
  5. Reviewing health records to abstract comprehensive medical, demographic, social, and administrative data.
  6. Using facility systems to code, abstract, record, and transmit data to the VA database.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:00pm EST

Additional Info: Not virtual, no telework, no relocation incentives, no PCS authorized.

Minimum Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizen; proficiency in English; background/security clearance; pre-employment physical; vaccination compliance.
  • Experience or education in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical coding, and health records.
  • Certification in coding (preferred: AHIMA or AAPC).
Qualifications:

Range from GS-4 to GS-8, with increasing experience and certification requirements at higher levels.

Physical requirements:

Use of fingers, walking, standing, emotional and mental stability.

Education:

Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; foreign education must include foreign equivalency documentation.
