Medical Records Technician (Coder-Outpatient and Inpatient)

Job Summary

This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Washington DC, Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Medical Records Technician (MRT) (Coder) is skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings, such as offices, group practices, and specialty centers.

Key Duties
  • Assign codes to documented patient care encounters (inpatient and outpatient) across a full range of healthcare services.
  • Select and assign codes from current ICD, CPT, and HCPCS systems following accepted coding practices and guidelines.
  • Review patient records comprehensively to abstract data and ensure complete and accurate coding.
  • Utilize facility systems to code, record, and transmit data to the VA national database.
Work Schedule & Location

Monday - Friday; 7:30am EST - 4:00pm EST. This is not a virtual position and telework is not available.

Requirements
