General Summary of Position
Under the direction of a Technical Specialist/Team Leader and/or Division Manager, performs routine, moderate and designated complex laboratory tests requiring independent judgement and some interpretation. Monitors quality of reagents and working conditions of instruments.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Based on assigned work area within the Clinical Pathology Department, performs a variety of analytical tests within established guidelines.Resolves problems with specimen, monitors and corrects factors that affect test procedures or results where possible.Recognizes abnormal test results, notifies appropriate personnel and completes documentation in computer records.Certifies quality control results are accurate. Alerts appropriate laboratory personnel when unable to resolve problems through the use of routine protocol.Provides results to physicians and nursing units as required, and according to standard department protocol.Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments and general work area according to laboratory protocol.Conducts routine maintenance, instrument calibration, verification procedures and completes minor troubleshooting on instruments.Takes appropriate steps to resolve customer service problems according to established department protocol.May accession and label specimens thereby expediting testing and continuity of processing.Trains students and new employees in proper laboratory techniques.Monitors reagent and supply levels and notifies appropriate personnel of shortages.
Minimum Qualifications
Education- Associate's degree required or
- Higher level degree required or
- Equivalent training, such as in medical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology programs required
Experience- 6 to 12 months experience required
Licenses and Certifications- MLT-Medical Lab Technician (ASCP) (or equivalent) within 1 Year required
