Medical Laboratory Technician (Finance)
Essential Duties:
- Collects and properly labels blood, urine, and other bodily fluids to conduct tests ordered by healthcare providers.
- Analyzes and documents the chemical content of bodily fluids with accuracy and efficiency, adhering to Good Laboratory Practice standards.
- Prepares, stains, and labels slides; keeps records of tests.
- Uses laboratory equipment to look for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms.
- Processes all samples and performs in-house testing according to written laboratory procedures.
- Performs testing and verifies all test results prior to release for charting.
- Consults with physicians and other medical professionals on staff as appropriate regarding laboratory tests.
- Follows established safety guidelines for working in the Medical Laboratory.
- Records daily temperatures for equipment and laboratory area; troubleshoots deviations to correct abnormal readings.
- Performs and documents all preventive maintenance for equipment and instrumentation.
- Performs and documents all calibrations, quality control, and quality assessment procedures according to manufacturer's instructions and/or current laboratory policy.
- Investigates deviations from expected results or instrument performance and takes action as directed, such as troubleshooting or completing a Corrective Action Form.
- Notifies the Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Director, and/or the Technical Consultant if a test system is out of control and troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
- Receives, processes, and performs Proficiency Test samples according to manufacturer's instructions and established protocol; maintains accurate records of PT receipt, results, and scores.
- Maintains sufficient reagent and supply inventory.
- Files all paperwork according to laboratory procedures; records are maintained for two years.
- Ensures all records, reports, claims, and correspondence related to examinations and procedures are properly kept and maintained.
- Participates in quality improvement, educational programs, or patient care management programs.
- Assists in resolving patient complaints, requests, and inquiries.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of an Associate's Degree in Applied Science and Medical Laboratory Technician Certification or equivalent; two years of related experience preferred.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; respond effectively to inquiries; communicate complex topics clearly.
- Ability to apply scientific or logical principles to practical problems and handle abstract and concrete variables.
- Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by ASCP or AMT required.
- Proficient in Internet, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, electronic health record software, and laboratory information systems.
- Must have a valid driver's license, access to a car, and auto liability insurance.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
The role involves exposure to a medical laboratory environment with direct patient contact. It requires bending, stooping, twisting, walking, climbing stools, sitting, and standing for periods. Ability to lift and maneuver up to 15 pounds is necessary.
