Medical Interpreter - Haitian Creole - Women's Health - Physician Office

In compliance with BSMH policy and procedures, particularly relating to client confidentiality, the Interpreter serves (remotely or in person) as a conduit of communication between speakers of two different languages in the consecutive, simultaneous and/or sight translation modes. The Interpreter understands and abides by all published Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for medical Interpreters in the United States. As needed, the Interpreter also contributes to BSMH’s efforts to advance the full range of diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence initiatives.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Accurately interprets from a source language to a target language for patients, staff, and families via Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), Over the Phone Interpreting (OPI) or Onsite as needed.
  2. Identifies and resolves conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices or behaviors, appropriately rendering messages from one language to another accurately, without omissions and additions; all while maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible in order to facilitate effective communication.
  3. Interprets using the consecutive and/or the simultaneous (if explicitly requested) mode of interpretation.
  4. Demonstrates cultural competency in dealing with patients, staff and all those being served.
  5. Able to travel to local area facilities as designated and as needed.
  6. Maintains timely and complete data, information and follows BSMH Language Services processes as requested.
  7. Adheres to strict guidelines from the National Standards of Practice and National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.
  8. Performs sight translation reading aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
  9. Provides cultural mediation to assist in patient care.
  10. Follows ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information and maintain client confidentiality pursuant to protocols established by the contract, HIPAA, and industry standards.
  11. Informs manager about patients’ concerns or needs for follow up/guidance.
  12. Supports the onboarding and orientation process of new interpreters, as needed.
  13. Collaborates with and supports Senior Interpreters with the execution of patient rounds, as needed.
  14. Supports the department’s translation function by coordinating the processing of requests, as needed.

Licensing/Certification

Minimum of a 40-hour Interpreting training course from a Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) approved program OR completion of approved program within 12-weeks of hire (required)

National Interpreter Certification obtained within 12 months of hire (required)

Education

HS/GED diploma (required)

Associate degree or equivalent experience (preferred)

Work Experience

2 years of experience working in an acute healthcare setting with diverse patient populations (preferred)

Experience providing remote interpreting services using a video and/or telephonic platform (preferred)

Training

EPIC Electronic Health Record (required)

Successful passing of medical interpreting proficiency assessment as condition to hire. (required)

Language

Haitian Creole Fluency (or corresponding language pair associated with this position). (required)
