General Summary

Under direction, is responsible for supervision of employees assigned to investigate deaths that occur within the jurisdiction of the Oakland County Medical Examiner in order to determine circumstances of death. Acts as liaison between the Medical Examiner's Office, health and law enforcement agencies and the general public. Supervises the follow-up of scene investigations. Answers inquiries and complaints from physicians, attorneys, funeral homes and relatives of deceased regarding policies and actions of the Medical Examiner's Office. Trains Investigators in policies and procedures of the division and legal aspects of this job. Prepares detailed reports on investigated cases for review by the Medical Examiner and Administrator. Secures and preserves evidence and specimens relating to investigation and autopsy of assigned case in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies. When assigned to afternoon, midnight or weekend shifts, assumes responsibility for the Medical Examiner Division. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. Employees of this classification are required to be available to respond and conduct off-duty death scene investigations as scheduled by management.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test.
  • Have had at least four (4) years of full-time work experience as a professional investigator associated with a law enforcement agency or related law enforcement investigation agency with at least one year in investigating homicides and/or major crimes as defined by the Uniform Crime Reporting Act as Part I Felonies.
  • Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six (6) month probationary period.

Special Requirements

  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur’s license.
  • Submit to annual tuberculin skin test or chest X-ray, at County expense.

Pay Range

USD $70,191.00 - USD $94,044.00 /Yr.
