Krist Samaritan Counseling Center is a nonprofit mental health agency committed to providing quality counseling and mental health services to individuals, couples, families, and our community.

We are seeking a dependable, compassionate, and detail-oriented Medical Billing & Collections Specialist to join our administrative team. This position is an excellent opportunity for someone with medical billing, insurance, collections, or healthcare administrative experience who wants to work in a mission-driven environment and play an important role in supporting access to mental health care.

The Medical Billing & Collections Specialist will be responsible for insurance billing, payment posting, insurance verification, collections, claim follow-up, denials and appeals, provider credentialing support, and related administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Submit accurate insurance claims to appropriate agencies within required contractual and regulatory timelines.
• Verify client insurance eligibility and benefits.
• Post and reconcile insurance payments, adjustments, and client payments.
• Review and interpret EOBs to identify payment discrepancies, denials, and client responsibility.
• Follow up with insurance companies regarding unpaid, denied, or outstanding claims.
• Follow up with clients regarding outstanding balances and payment responsibilities.
• Prepare and send monthly client statements.
• Research, correct, and resubmit denied or rejected claims.
• Assist with preparing and following up on insurance appeals.
• Communicate with insurance companies and Provider Relations departments as needed.
• Assist with provider credentialing and facilitate the addition of new clinical staff to insurance panels.
• Maintain accurate billing, payment, and credentialing records.
• Work closely with the Intake Specialist and administrative team to assist with scheduling appointments, client check-in, and collection of copayments and other payments.
• Provide professional, respectful, and compassionate customer service to clients, families, insurance representatives, providers, and staff.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive client information.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Executive Director.
  

Qualifications

• 1–2 years of experience in medical billing, insurance billing, collections, healthcare administration, or a related field preferred.
• Relevant experience and demonstrated knowledge may be considered in place of formal experience requirements.
• Working knowledge of healthcare insurance processes.
• Ability to read and understand EOBs.
• Experience with insurance verification, claims submission, payment posting, and collections preferred.
• Experience with insurance denials and appeals is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including individuals experiencing mental health challenges or stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard computer applications.
• Experience with Valant EMR is a plus.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively as part of a team.
