Medical Assistant Sr - Pain Management Outpatient Clinic

This position acts as a mentor to new Level II & entry-level Medical Assistants, assisting with their orientation and development. It involves providing direct patient care and serving as a liaison between providers and patients. Responsibilities include taking vitals, patient history, venipuncture, lab work, x-ray, referrals, and managing patient phone messages as directed by the provider or clinical supervisor. The role requires age-related competencies and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals based on patient contact level.

Qualifications
  • Current nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification/registration AND 3 years of experience as a clinic Medical Assistant in an ambulatory setting
  • At least 3 years of direct customer service experience; 3 years of telephone customer service experience preferred
  • CPR or BLS certification within 90 days of employment
  • Validation of competency in medication administration
  • Demonstration of core competencies within 90 days
  • Effective communication skills in English (Verbal/Written)
Responsibilities

The Senior Medical Assistant's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Instructing patients/caregivers on signs/symptoms of complications and home management per care plan
  • Documenting patient status accurately and promptly using EMR
  • Reviewing charts for accuracy after each visit
  • Reporting suspected abuse and referring patients/families to appropriate resources
  • Performing procedures such as Venipuncture, EKG, Waived Testing, Bone Density, X-Ray, among others as assigned
  • Sterilizing equipment after procedures
  • Organizing workflow to meet patient needs efficiently
  • Gathering and documenting patient information, including lab values, pain levels, education needs, nutritional status, and potential complications
  • Participating in patient assessment and re-assessment
  • Monitoring for signs of abnormal lab values and deviations from baseline
  • Contributing to care planning, including medication administration (excluding narcotics)
  • Participating in the orientation and development of new staff
  • Signing off on competencies for Level II staff

The Medical Assistant Senior is accountable for patient care, ensuring a hazard-free environment, and following safety protocols. The role may involve additional physical or respiratory requirements and exposure to hazards such as infections, blood, body fluids, chemicals, and electrical equipment. Standard precautions must be followed.
