Job Description
Assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.
Responsibilities
- Maintains patient flow during clinic hours.
- Documents review of systems; measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height (see Appendix A for specifics); updates medical, social, and family history; reviews medications and updates medication list at each visit.
- Records patient information accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Assists in training new employees if needed.
- Prepares patient charts in EMR by scanning, abstracting, and reviewing all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other relevant medical records.
- Accesses external websites or contacts outside facilities to obtain necessary information.
- Acts as Super User for EMR if required.
- Refills and pre-authorizes medications, communicating with patients, pharmacies, or insurance companies as needed.
- Maintains records of patient samples and medications, disposing of expired medications appropriately.
- Prepares exam rooms, maintains cleanliness, and orders medical supplies as needed.
- Completes patient assistance paperwork and requests.
- Obtains pertinent medical information from patients to facilitate decision-making per office protocol.
- Responds to patient calls and messages via MyChart.
- Manages work queues in EMR/Practice Management systems, including answering calls, scheduling, check-in/out, and pre-certifications.
- Operates diagnostic equipment such as EKGs and cardiac monitors; performs clinical duties like phlebotomy and cast removal as assigned.
- Ensures a safe and secure work environment, following legal regulations and maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Adheres to legal responsibilities and demonstrates support for quality measures and patient experience.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
Requires specialized knowledge or skills relevant to the role, including:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate Degree and/or Certified/Registered Medical Assistant preferred.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or relevant experience required.
- 2 to 5 years of MA or related experience preferred, with practice in various care settings.
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, EMR, scheduling systems).
- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
- Clinical skills such as phlebotomy, EKG, stitches removal, splinting, etc., are highly preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
Certified/Registered Medical Assistant preferred; BLS certification required; must successfully complete skills orientation.
