Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant manages patient flow, obtains and documents vitals, and performs patient care and clerical duties. Supports the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare, demonstrating a commitment to quality service.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Greet and escort patients to exam rooms courteously and promptly.
- Review patient charts to ensure all reports and results are available prior to exams; obtain reports as needed.
- Record patient chief complaints and vitals (height, weight, BP).
- Prepare exam/procedure rooms with appropriate supplies based on the reason for visit.
- Review and complete patient history forms, querying for missing information within provider parameters.
- Assist providers with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
- Draw blood or assist with specimen collection, prepare and route specimens to labs, verifying insurance details.
- Document all activities, responses, and prescribed medications in the medical record.
- Communicate provider instructions to patients within scope of training.
- Follow infection control, safety, and confidentiality policies.
- Phone prescriptions to pharmacies as per provider orders.
- Provide patients with results and information as directed by the provider.
- Assist with scheduling future appointments, surgeries, or tests.
- Note: Medical Assistants are not authorized to interpret reports or dispense medical advice independently.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Certified Medical Assistant required; alternatively, completion of a medical assistant training program or two years of related experience (e.g., Army Medic, Navy Corpsman) at hire.
- If not certified at hire, must obtain certification within 18 months.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR certification required at hire.
- Proficiency in clinical skills such as phlebotomy, blood pressure, EKG, injections.
- Knowledge of infection control, safety, and confidentiality policies.
- Preferred: 2+ years clinical support experience in a medical office; EMR experience.
